Master items reappear after inserting new page

This is very frustrating so hopefully someone can please help me! I’m working on a cookbook and each page is created based on a master page with master items on them, and for each recipe, I just override those items to insert a new recipe. When i try to insert a single page in the middle of the document, switching left and right pages for the remainder of the document) all the master page items for the NEW SIDE reappear, so I’ve got two layers of text on top of each other, the existing one, and the new master items. So if I add a whole spread instead of a single page, this doesn’t happen. Can someone please help advise how I might be able to add just one page without messing up the whole thing?

you could alter the options on surrounding pages for ‘keeping spreads together’ or ‘allowing spreads to shuffle’ so that those pages do not move when you insert a blank page. you may be better to create a spread, then delete one of the pages. Its hard to know exactly what you are descibing without seeing the file.

      Pailin,
I cannot explain why this is happening, but I experienced the same problem with one of my jobs.
It seems that this is a flaw in ID.
As far as I could diagnose it, it results from the following: If the NEW master page was created based on an EXISTING one and not from the blank master-master then both load when inserting a new page.

This is not a bug or a flaw in the program. This is the way InDesign works. When a page changes from a left- to a right-hand page, the master page is reapplied. If you think about it, it makes sense and is the way it should work most of the time.

If you need to add or remove pages in a facing-pages document, then always add/remove an even number of pages each time.

Thank you! That clears the air for me, and it does make sense for things to work like this especially with folios. So glad I became a member :)

Of course it’s a flaw in InDesign!

If it worked properly, Pailin and others like myself wouldn’t have this question. (Which wasn’t answered adequately.)

Here’s what makes sense: once I have opted to over-ride a Master page, a Master page doesn’t annoyingly reappear just because I want to move a page.
There are many times when I need to move or delete just a single page within a booklet. In Quark, I can move single or multiple pages without grief.

Please inform us how we can move or delete a single page.

Here’s the solution I came up with (no thanks to Adobe):

To insert a single page into the middle of a document:

      1. Go to Pages.

      2. Keep “Allow Document Pages to Shuffle” checked. Keep “Allow Selected Spread to Shuffle” checked as well.

      3. Highlight all of the pages you do not want affected.
(i.e. if you want to insert a single page after Page 5, highlight 6 thru to end of document).

      4. Select “Apply Master to Pages…” , then select “None.”
This will remove the Master settings and allow you to do whatever you want.

      5. Insert your single page (“Master” or “None”).
The rest of the document pages will move forward one page, CLEANLY, with no unwanted additions.
If you have Automatic Page Numbering on the subsequent pages, it remains unaffected. The pages will continue to be numbered correctly.

      6. If you repeat the process and re-apply Master A, all the content of Master A will appear on those pages, giving you back the muddle you wanted to avoid.

If someone has a cleaner solution, please post it.

Suki, this works and I have a suggestion to make it even better. Let’s say you use master A. Dublicate Master A, call it B and on Master B delete the items that you would normally activate and alter, so that only the pagenumber etc. remains.
Having inserted the pages needed, apply Master B to all the pages that comes after the newly inserted page(s). I hope this makes sense.

The best practice here is to NOT override master page items on document pages. Build the master pages so they only contain objects which remain intact (other than changing automatically, like Current Page Number placeholders) as is on document pages. I know that’s not possible 100% of the time but it should be the goal, especially if you need to add single pages to a facing-pages spread more than a couple times.

      That means:
      1. Use Primary Text frames on the master pages, with NO text in them. These don’t have to be overridden on the document pages. If you insert a single page and a left-facing page ends up on the right, and you have different columns/margins for left and right, you can easily reapply the correct master and not end up with overlapping text frames.

      2. Use dynamic text features on master pages whenever possible. For example, instead of typing in placeholder text for headers (which must be overridden and entered manually on doc pages), insert and format a Section Marker there (Type > Insert Special Character > Markers >) and then when a header changes for a new section, use Numbering & Sections on that doc page to change the section name.

      3. For all other items that need to appear in the same location on various pages but customized for that page, create a Library item or a Snippet, which remember their locations, and base them on an object style whenever possible. Example: photo credit text frames, pull quotes, image captions, images with caption, order form, placeholder ads, etc.
