I work in an office where most documents are created in Microsoft Word. I use InDesign for layout and marketing. However, yesterday I was working on a document that needed 1″ margins all around. So I set my margins at 6p0. I work for engineers. My boss actually got a ruler out and measured the margins which were 1 and 1/8 inch. Why the discrepancy? I had to reset the margins at 5p3 in order to measure them on the printout correctly. Thanks for any insights anyone might have.

(Oops. Never mind my old question – 6p = 1 inch. You may want to know that if you are used to inches, you can change ID’s default measurement system.)

      How accurate is your printer?

Did your boss measure the page on screen at 100% or after printing out. The change in size is almost always based on the printer or printer driver resizing the page. For example, people often export a PDF then print the PDF, and the full-size page gets scaled slightly at print time to “fit” on the paper. (You can control the printer driver by clicking “Printer” in the Print dialog box.)

Measurement was made after printing. Printed both on an HP b/w printer and a Konica Minolta color printer and scanner. I printed directly from InDesign CS5.1. I will check out the printers and drivers. I like to use picas instead of inches because it allows me to move graphics, objects, text, with better precision. Thank you so much for your help. God Bless.

I think that David is likely right. Many office printers default to ‘Fit’ and will shrink the document’s pages so it will not be clipped by the area at the edges of the paper on which the printers cannot print. Of course, if you are typesetting letter-sized pages and printing at ‘Actual Size’ to letter-sized paper, the edges will be clipped. But, unless you have bleeds or text very close to the edge of the page, no one will notice.
