I work for an agency that uses ID for documents that tend to be rich with maps. The maps are usually created in a software called ArcMap, an ESRI piece of software. These maps do not tend to translate perfectly from their native format to Illustrator or to PDF format. There ends up being hundreds of layers, words being broken down to one letter per layer.
Well, that said and the fact that I can still edit them in Illustrator and that they are vector art, you might think that it would be a piece of cake to import them into ID. That is my problem.
I have a chapter from our report that is all maps produced from ArcMap, in PDF format. They range from 2500MB to 5500MB. One map per 11×17 inch page. Some import fine, others just spin the accursed import wheel and nothing happens. I have also tried converting the maps to tif format, but they are not as crisp as the vector file and are huge. This is the most complex map:

Is there something that I do not know which is preventing the import to happen? I do not know if the problem is on my end or if it on the mapmaker end. Some maps import fine, other large ones do not.
Any words of wisdom would be very welcome. I am very thankful to have a group like this to guide me in troubleshooting problems.
