Managing multiple variants of brochures

Hello. I need to create many small variants of a 12-page brochure, tweaking them to different vertical markets. Both text and images will need tweaking for each market sector, but the basic layout is the same for all. I saw some instructions for using XML, but this seemed pretty complex for me. Besides, I have things like pale grey rectangular backgrounds to some text blocks, and the positioning of them will vary depending on the length of text before it, so I presume this sort of thing could only be achieved with some complex scripting, which sounds ever further beyond me. I was hoping that there is a simpler way to manage multiple brochure variant tweaks like this? Very many thanks for considering this for me! SJ.

This would be a great project to use with conditional text and anchored objects. The pale gray background can be achieved using paragraph shading (new in CC 2015). No problem my friend. No scripting required.

Thank you Kelly! That was a perfect answer. Solved!
