I am currently working on a 128 page product catalog for my company. We will have a cross index in the back only by part numbers. This catalog was originally done in Quark and we have now tranfered it to InDesign CS3. I have been reading up on making an index but from what I have seen it only refers to using words and not numbers.

So how do I create an index using our part numbers instead of words? Here is an example of what my charting looks like. So there might be instances when I have multiple product numbers on one line or just one part number on the line.

Capacity Approv./Lstg. Ship Wt. Yellow Red Grey White
Style Includes Gallons Regulation* Lbs./Kgs. Model No. Model No. Model No. Model No

      manual drum support 1-55/200L FM,N,O 391/177 896200 896201 896203 896205
      self-close drum support 1-55/200L FM,N,O,U 393/178 896220 896221 896223 896225
      manual drum support 2-55/400L N,O 610/277 899100 899101 899103 899105

You can see the part numbers that start with 89XXXXX. This is what I want to index. The part numbers with their corresponding page number.

      Thanks, Barb

You can index numbers as well as words — just try it!

In fact, you can index just about everything (as long as it's plain text). I copied some text from a web page on mathematics, and added index entries for '0', '1', '+', 'logb(x)', and '=', and got this cute little one-page index:

      Symbols

      + 1

      = 1

      0 1

      1 1

      L

      logb(x) 1
