    I see there's a text variable for a section marker, which displays the name of the section, but is there a way to create a variable that shows the section number? I tried doing it with a running header using character styles, but it doesn't work properly when I put it on a master page. It won't update.

    In a nutshell, I'm trying to use section numbers to display as chapter numbers so I don't have to use a book file.

    Will it work if you detach it from the master page? (cmd-shift-click on it, on the document page)
