Layered fonts are increasingly popular, and there are some descent ones that are free. But boy are they a pain to work with. God help you if you need kerning. I’d love to see some professional tips on using them, or a discussion about them. Better still would be a script or plug in that would make it easy to set one instance, then with a command make the necessary copies and style them appropriately.

As it is I set one instance using, if possible, a hybrid on the font — one that has fill, stroke, and shadow. Once I’m satisfied I switch to the selection tool and apply style 1 with a shortcut, copy in place (Option Down arrow, then Up arrow), apply Style 2 with a shortcut, and so on, building from the bottom up. I’m rubish at scripting, so manual is the only way right now. So far I haven’t felt the need to isolate each style to its own layer.

      Cool idea for an article!
One option to speed up editing might be to use the Linked Text feature… hm…
