My Footnote is long. Is there a way when Footnote continue and move to next page or next text frame one sign for example little hand or other thing insert automatically in the end of last line in first text frame to show this Footnote is long and continue in next page and in the beginning of first line Footnote in next page automatically insert sign to show this Footnote moved from previous Footnote page. (sorry my English is not good)

It’s possible to do that but it’s a bit flakey. You can place a small frame with text wrap at the bottom right of a frame if a footnote continues on the next page, and a similar small frame at the top left of the first line of a footnote continuation. Naturally, placing those frames may cause reflow and when there are changes in the text, notes are bound to reflow. You could ask someone to do a script for you that places (and re-places) those frames in a text. That’s about the best you can do I think.

I have several suggestions, the first two untested. And, this would be a great feature request.

First, you might try using an anchored frame in the right or bottom margin instead of a frame with text wrap in line as Peter suggested. Perhaps follow the anchor for the frame with a page break marker. This might be manageable but not by any means efficient. For the design of a page to include such a frame, I’m thinking of the first two or three words from the top of the next verso that some printers used to put in the bottom margin of the preceding recto to help readers hold the thought of the writer while turning the page. A great help when one is reading aloud.

Second, I wonder if the ornament that marks the continuation could be exposed as a exportable and printable glyph with a script. I have no idea if this could be done but I have seen scripters bring to the surface other aspects of InDesign that are not accessible through the interface.

Third (and this I tried and there are a number of reasons not to use it if you value the integrity of the text), a character style that applies an underline using Japanese dots to a series of en spaces provides a sort of super-ellipsis. I’m going to play with this a bit and see if it can be improved.

Dear Peter and Lindsey thanks so much for your reply.
Such as Peter said I think only way is use a script for automatically . I should insert glyph manually for this.
Many designer that I see have this problem but there is no alternative.
In English books when footnotes flow and part of its move to next page how to show that in page and next page? ( please show with photo)

      Pretty cool!

When the layout is done, just 1 click! ;-)

Of course, the layout could move! … No problem, launch the script again!

It’s a “light” version: I’ve considered paras that runs between 2 pages!

      Continuing Footnotes

I’ve written a script-brother to reset the footnotes! [All the 2-glyphs per footnote are removed from the pages]

As usual, not for free! … but a real time-saver!

Thanks so much for your reply
1- The book has for example 200 pages. In some pages there are footnotes that continue to next page.( for example 30 footnotes)
Can this script change all of them correctly?

2-one problem is if we have paragraphs in some pages that continue to next page (no footnote) will change by this script.

3- can we change glyphs in this script? change little hand with other glyphs.

4- can we apply style on glyphs in this script for example wrapt text or size and …?

5- what version of InDesign can use this script?

unfortunately I can not pay money for this script because I have no international credit cards to send money from my country freely.

      This script is amazing.
      Thanks

      Hi,

1/ Totally Yes of course, if just a para between pages.
2/ No problem for the script: It’s only based on footnotes!
3/ Yeap: it’s an automatic bullet para style! so just modify the para style!
      4/ See above.
5/ ID CC 2015. but it could work with an ID older version because of its basic code syntax [to be simply tested].
      …/ Not unfortunately, I don’t work for free! ;-)

Seriously, if you only have 30 footnotes to be treated, do it manually! …
