List numbers linked to list text formatting?

I discovered that the way a numbered list (1,2,3 or A,B,C…) is displayed depends on the formatting of the first character of the text of a list item. I don’t want that. The numbers should be “straight” standard 1,2,3 regardless whether the list text is in italic, red coloured or whatever. In Word it takes on whatever formatting is stored in the final paragraph marker of the list item. So if that is left “standard”, any of the text itself can be formatted any way you want.
I ran into this problem importing Word into InDesign but found this quirky behaviour is more generally applied by formatting the numbers in ways it should not.
Did I overlook something in paragraph style “numbered lists” section?

You need character style with font style “Regular” and select it under “Bullets and Numbering > Character Style”.
