I am pretty new to InDesign and sure could use some expert help. I have been tasked with creating an interactive PDF with all of the following elements:
*Over 200 small summary shots (3-4 units will fit on one page)with descriptive text, Links to (PDF Drawing, Picture page displaying 9 Shots of each unit, PDF Specifications)
*PDF Drawing (Shows unit and overall Scale dimensions)
*Picture Page (Displays 9 photographs of Each Unit)
*PDF Specification (Unit Specifications – shows all associated parts, Typically 8-9 pages per unit)

I have the framework built but i am having trouble figuring out the best way to create the links on the summary section that will go to all these different Drawings, Pictures and Specifications.

Do I use hyperlinks? If I do this and i have to add a page, does that mess up my links?
Do I use Bookmarks? I need these little summary sections to hyperlink to individual pictures or PDF’s. A bookmark will build an index but that doesn’t help me a log..I don’t really know how..

Its going to be a large file and i am really hoping you guys can help direct me on the easiest path. I’m stressing about it bad. Its a huge project, I am the only one working on it and the demand for a completed project is fast approaching.

Jarrod, first of all, DON’T try to create links between separate PDF files, instead, put it all in a single PDF if you can. Links between PDF files are problematic depending on how the PDF is distributed and used.

You should be able to use hyperlinks or buttons to do this. If you hyperlink to a text anchor, the anchor will move with the text as the document is updated. If you hyperlink to a specific page, yes, that hyperlink will go to the wrong location if you reorder pages.

Thanks Keith. I’ve tried to figure out how to create a text anchor but I haven’t been too successful so far. I will do some research and give it a shot. thanks for the feedback.
