      Hi – and don’t laugh…..

I’m using CS2 (because the publisher I work for still does…)

I create music instrumental parts for orchestras and each instrument has its own file, containing individual EPS files for each page. So, for instance, Flute 1 maybe has 8 pages and the individual links are named FLT101.EPS, FLT102.EPS, Flt103.EPS etc.

All good – but I generally make the next part using the previous one as a “template” and simply update the links using the links palette. So, for Flute 2 I’ll re-link as follows: FLT101.EPS re-links to FLT201.EPS, FLT102.EPS re-links to FLT202.EPS etc.

What I’d like is a script that allows me to re-link to a new set of EPS files (same number of files) using a wildcard. So, in other words, I’d like to change links FLT1??.EPS into FLT2??.EPS

Is there a quick and easy way to do this ? Possibly a script ?

I’m not familiar with writing scripts, so need help or even a link to an existing script.

      Thanks !

Jon, the problem is, that the object modell has changed dramatically between CS6 and CS2 and I assume that no scripter has CS2 on his machine anymore. So there is no way to test this.

      Hi Kai,

      Shame…..

Do you want to have a stab at it – and I’ll test it ?

      Just a thought….

      Jon

hm, it would be better, if you built a example doc with 5 old linked filed and 5 new ones and describe exactly, what ist the goal. You can sent me your test-doc to forum@ruebiarts.de

To the topic: a non-scripting solution:
If you have an images subfolder for each part (flute 1 pages 1-12, flute 2 pages 1-12 etc) and each page file with identical filenames you could simply relink your document to the graphics in the part you want to create. The graphics will initially show as modified, but you know that all are produced identically and the swap is safe.

      Sidebar:
Why would your publisher continue to use a tool released in 2002?
With more recent versions of InDesign, you could have multiple layers (one for each part) and ultimately you export the book x number of times, with just one layer active. To create each part, you could duplicate and rename the previous layer, and drag-n-drop the new part eps onto the existing.
The efficiencies gained right there would seem to make buying a new PC and the software worthwhile in productivity, accuracy, etc. You are correct that scripting could improve this even more.
So what is stopping them? (asked seriously.)
