The only way that I can find of to access the italics is by selecting the alternative glyps for each character separately. The italic glyphs have their own section in the dropdown menu that filters all glyphs by categories, and it's surprisingly called Italics. The alternative glyphs even say “Italic (ital)”, so I would assume there was a way to automatically convert characters by using styles or something of the sort. How do I do this?

I have read that InDesign supports somekind of GSUB (glyph subsitution) feature that might make it possible, but I have no idea how to use it. I read couple of articles but I think they we're meant for programmers or something.

I have read that InDesign supports somekind of GSUB (glyph subsitution) feature …

It does, but only for the items that are defined through the Character panel: the ones listed in the Opentype flyout menu. And 'ital' is not one of them. So apparently there is no way to automatically access/replace these glyphs.

For what it's worth, I think the 'ital' Opentype feature is deprecated by now as it was a very bad idea to begin with.

Yeah, I agree with the bad idea, I just like the idea of free Adobe Serif in form of the mincho, but having to manually replace each italic glyph… I'm working with a different typeface already. Thanks anyway.

As a side note, the CJK vesions of InDesign allow “composite fonts” (different from the “CID fonts”), a means to combine an East Asian font with a regular western font, presumably because early on the letters in the East Asian fonts weren't anything to write home about. InTools' World Tools Pro brings this feature to western-language versions of IDCS5 and later.
