However I set the keep options in the following example, they increase my desired minimum of two lines to three. What am I doing wrong? https://drive.google.com/open?id=1naTSkwY1gAeNcUSCXnegpyBmic-lt6hu

Barry: that link doesn’t appear to work without permissions. You probably need to change the sharing settings in google drive.

What do you see wrong in this image?

Minimum means it must be two lines but it can be more. You are looking for an option that says exact two lines, but this option does not exist in InDesign, as far as I know.

I want to balance the columns. There is clearly enough room for the bottom lines of the left and centre paragraphs to wrap over, but they won’t.

Did you turn on the Balance Columns checkbox in Object > Text Frame Options?

Yes, I did, David. Made no difference. It refuses to allow less than three lines at the end of a paragraph, even though I have specified two

Well, in this particular case (in the image you shared), it cannot work. If the “says Nigel” line moves to the 2nd column, then that forces “sport, which” to the 3rd column, right? Then the line that begins “Nigel, and” cannot move to the 3rd column because that would leave only one line at the top of the paragraph. So it’s a no-win.
