Keep Option in Paragraph Style Conflicts with TOC

I'm writing a simple instruction manual, and have the keep options of my “Section Header” paragraph style set to begin on next page. When I go to create a TOC, this is picked up by InDesign and I can't set down the TOC because, apparently, it's picking up that keep option. Is there a way to override this (or a work around?) so that I can set down my TOC properly? Since it's a small document, I've removed the keep option from the “Section Header” paragraph style and have applied static keep options just to get the job done… but that's no way to work! Especially if the next project is hundreds of pages long instead of six.

      Suggestions? I'm in CS4.

      Thanks,

      Tice

      Tice,

It isn't clear whether you are using a different style for the TOC as you are for the section header. The “section header” style is just a flag to the TOC engine to say, “this is the text to use for the entry”. It then applies whatever style you have assigned to the TOC.

I haven't tried to reproduce what you say here, but if it is carrying the keep option over from the section style, it sounds like a bug.

      Tice,

There are two possibilities that I can think of.

First, is what Jake said. Did you set up the TOC Style to use a different style than “Section Header?” Set up separate, dedicated paragraph styles for the TOC that will display when you place it. For example “TOC Section Header.” Then set up your TOC style to include the “Section Header” and apply the “TOC Section Header” paragraph style. ID will grab the content of Section Header and display it according to the TOC Section Header paragraph style. (Be sure NOT to base this style on the Section Header para style unless you change the keep options in the TOC Section Header para style.)

If you do have separate TOC para styles set up and applied correctly, it could be that the separate TOC paragraph style is “based on” the Section Header paragraph style and is pulling in its keep options.
