Okay, say I am editing a long document in InDesign (stay with me for some poor examples): I selected something on page 23, then I moved ahead to page 42. I think I’ve already selected something on 42 that I need to delete, so I press delete, but nothing happens. I undo, nothing happens. Of course, the object on page 23 has deleted and then reappeared and remains selected. I just can’t see it because I’m on page 42. Or say I left my cursor blinking in a text frame back on page 23 and want to quickly get back to whereever that was. Is there a “go to selection/cursor” command or preference anywhere?

You can choose Layout > Go Back
But I’m not sure how this is happening for you… if I have something selected on page 2, and I jump to any other page (except page 3), that object becomes deselected so I cannot delete it.

Thanks, David. It’s not that I am jumping. I am just scrolling, looking through the document. Testing, I do see that if I jump, then the object deselects. That’s not the case, for me anyway, when simply scrolling. It is also true that if I have some text selected on page 85 and I scroll to page 96, Layout>Go Back doesn’t take me to 85. Interestingly, in my test, it took me to 90 one time, 92 another. I’m quick scrolling in the tests. Maybe it sees a momentary pause on another page as the place to “Go Back” to? Regardless, I’m guessing the fundamental answer is that when scrolling a document, there’s no such command? Thanks for the link. Will read that for other pointers.

Ah! Now I get it. This is a great question, and it reminded me that there is a secret, hidden feature that does what you want: “Fit Selection in Window.” I believe it only works with a keyboard shortcut, which is by default Command-Option-= (equal sign). However, on the Mac, that shortcut may zoom in to fill your screen (it does for me), which is annoying. So I added my own custom keyboard shortcut (I’ll add a link below for how to do that). You can find this feature in the Product Area –> Views, Navigation… just scroll down to find Fit Selection in Window.
So, once you have a shortcut that works, you can type it and InDesign will zoom in on whatever is selected… no matter what page you’re on.

Beautiful! This is why I have been a fan since early in the “InDesign Secrets” days. Thanks, David. (And yes, it does fill the screen…)
