Is it possible to link same position text boxes on multiple page with a script?

      I have 2 master pages A and B.

      I need to create a large book which will have A, B, A, B, A, B, A, B etc…

I’d quite like to format some text through a spreadsheet and then paste it into the pages, to flow all the way through the elements in the odd or even page elements.

Is there a way to link each of the same position text box elements, using a script perhaps, even though they are split over odd or even pages, to allow me to paste and flow this text in.

      Possible?

      Thanks!

I think I understand what you’re after, not sure — your explanation isn’t entirely clear. E.g., what do you mean by ‘a book which will have A, B, A, B etc.’? And you format text in a spreadsheet then paste it in InDesign? Wel. . .

Anyway, here’s what I think you’re after. On a master spread, place a text frame on the left-hand page and one on the right-hand page. Now when you thread the two frames on the master, and you place the text on a document page, the text flows from p. 1 to p. 2, p2 to p. 3, etc.

When you do not thread the frames on the master, then place the text on p. 1, the full text flows from p.1 to p. 3, from p. 3 to p. 5, etc. And when you place a second text stream on p. 2, it will flow on the even pages only.

Maybe you don’t need a script all!

      Hi Peter,

Yes, sorry, perhaps I should have been clearer:

A and B are masters. Then I format in a spreadsheet and paste into InD, yes.

The issue I have is threading the text from the first page (using master A) into the next page (using the same master), I can do this manually by adding 400x A and 400x B and then going through and linking all the boxes on the odd (A) and even (B), but thought there may be a quicker way.

      Thanks!

That’s a basic InDesign thing. Hold the Shift key down when you place the text. Look under ‘auto flow’ (or something like that) in the InDesign help file or a book.

Ah yes, aware of that, but I would like the text to flow into the same text box element on each master (which exist in the same location), across all odds/even pages. This is why I thought there may be the need for a script… To select the next page text box based on it’s X,Y.

      Thanks!

Aha. So you have more than one text frame on each master page, is that correct?

Yes, that is correct. However, due to formatting, I only wanted to concentrate on the one text frame element per page, so I did not mention more than one text frame. For this exercise, I was going to focus on one box, linked on each page (A to A to A etc., or B to B to b etc.)

You have to be able to identify text frames on the document pages, and the easiest way to achieve that would be to name them on your master pages. So if you have two text frames on each page, one at the top and one at the bottom, name the top one ‘A’ on the Layers panel. Then override the top frame on the first page and place text in it. The frame will be overset. Now write a script that, while the story is overset, adds a page, overrides frame ‘A’, and links it to the previous frame ‘A’. You can do that with as many frames as needed, call them ‘B’, ‘C’, etc.
