Hi everybody, I am new to indesign and have to say that it isn’t a very straight forward intuitive software but from what I understand form the pros it is well worth my while to overcome the difficulties.
In general I am able to fine a workaround my problems with patient digging and looking around for solutions to them but I encountered the oddest thing: when ever I type ‘ I get > instead. it drives me nuts…
So far I eliminated the possibility that it is font, input source, or dictionary/document language (if that what it is?) related as I tried all fonts, both in hebrew and english and changed the language of the dictionary/document from arabic (ME default, I wish i knew how to change that) to Hebrew and English US/UK.
      Please help, thanks

Problem solved, I have now Idea how. I played with the preferences and ticked off the “use typographer’s quotes” and then tried to retype the sign and voila but when I reticked it on it didn’t change (well it did change to a different looking ‘ but not to >. So I have really no idea.

You can change most defaults when all documents are closed.
I would strongly recommend checking out some resources, such as subscribing to lynda.com and watching some videos there (such as my InDesign Essential Training course). You can get 7-days free here: https://www.lynda.com/trial/indesignsecrets

We don’t cover Hebrew and multi-lingual publishing too much here, but there is a good title by Diane Burns at lynda.com, too, on multi-lingual publishing. There are some people here who speak Hebrew or use the ME version, though, and perhaps they can help.
