What am I missing? I’ve indexed Chapter 1. Moving on to Chapter 2, I find the Topics and References did not follow. I imported the Topics from the Chapter 1 file, but it did not import any References. Should I proceed, and will all the References be combined at some point?

Indexing is hell, in my humble opinion. And indexing multiple documents in a book is just multiple iterations of hell.

No, there is no way that I know of to see all the index topics (entries, titles, whatever you want to call them) and their numbers throughout a book at the same time. It’s horrible.

The index file should be a separate file on disk, or saved inside the book panel or something, so that you can do a good job indexing no matter where you are in the book project.

Hold on. In Indesign CC, at least, if you check the Book button on the Index pane, you CAN see all the references, wherever you are.

Oh my goodness, Reno, you are right, and I am officially beet red with embarrassment. I haven’t indexed one of my books for a while, an I had completely forgotten that Adobe had added that feature years ago.

The reason I was oblivious to it, I think is that you must have all the book documents open at the same time for that feature to work.

I still insist that indexing is hell, though. ;)

        No harm done. Thanks.
