Index of proper names + MD

I’m trying to create an index of 1600 physicians. I’ve discovered that InDesign must differentiate names by capital letters because it refuses to include the MD. So, for example, if I tell it to index John L. Smith, MD, and I want Smith, John L., MD, I get Smith, John L. I tried placing letters between all last names and the doctor suffix and removed the comma space but it didn’t work, so it must be the capitalization.

I’m open to trying Indexmatic but can’t figure out how to write the query. Not everyone has the same suffix, some have Jr or III and some don’t have middle initials.
      Any help?

Hi Trina, did you ever figure this out? I’m in a similar situation with and index of court cases. The index won’t pick up anything after a comma such as “Company1, Inc v. Company2, LLC.”

I’ve tried using non-breaking spaces and also using “No Break” character treatment, but no luck.

Which version of InDesign are you using? With my InDesign CC 2019 it seems to work perfectly.

I’m using CC 2019 and it’s not working at all. All of the “[comma] LLC, Inc” etc. are breaking off as their own index entry. For example:

        Texaco, Inc.

        Indexes to Texaco AND Inc.

I’m using the standard subject key command. What key command are you using, or are you manually entering them?

Hi John – No, I didn’t get it to work in InDesign. I’ve been using Indexmatic for several years. It allows me to be very custom with my queries. It’s tricky to figure out initially but once you get it working, it’s so much easier than trying to put in a ton of hidden marks and then still not get what you want. Good luck.

I select the whole text (“John L. Smith, MD,”) that I want to show up in my index, with the mouse. Then I open the index panel and click on the button to create an index entry. Here it shows as “John L. Smith, MD,”, which I change manually to “Smith, John L., MD,”. Finally I let InDesign create the index and voilĂ : it’s “”John L. Smith, MD,””.

Thanks. Was looking for a key-command solution (faster) since I have several hundred of these, but it looks like the traditional method is the only way to go. Appreciate your feedback.

I think I got it to do that, but I had over 1,000 names and couldn’t change them all manually. Indexmatic does it automatically once I set it up. Every time the client makes and edit I would have had to do it all over again, resulting in endless hours of changing names.
