InDesign won't apply paragraph style

I’m using two paragraph styles in a document: Body Text & Crosshead. I type in a new line, which is still in Body Text and change the para style to Crosshead. It shows as now being Crosshead, but visually its style is still Body Text. InDesign simply refuses to change the style.

My only solution is to find a crosshead from elsewhere in the document, paste it into the story and re-type the new text on top.

Why won’t InDesign apply the Crosshead style?

Normally, it should. Not unless the body text was modified in some way.

To “force” InDesign to apply a style, click in the text you want to change, then hold down the option key and click the paragraphs style you want it to be. Note that doing it this way will remove any local formatting in that text.

That’s if you’re on a Mac. I guess on a PC you would hold down the alt key?

Additional note–make sure that the crosshead doesn’t have a character style sheet applied to the entire thing. If it does, the character style will take precedence.

I agree with Dwayne. I’m afraid you have a character style applied without knowing.

(And yes, it’s ‘alt’ on the PC…)

This same issue has been driving me crazy for a very long time. I use Character styles very sparingly so I know there are no character styles in my paragraph. When I try to apply my “body style which is Helv TT Med Cond Italic 22/26 it simply does not “take. It reverts back to Futura 10 on 26. I’ve tried holding down the option key, and EVEN upgrading to 2018. Surely there must be a more serious problem here? Yes Im a Quark victim but I’ve been using style sheets for decades.
Ive been getting used to InDesign for about a year now but not FT. HELP

Ellen: It’s possible (tho unlikely) that a character style is being applied without you knowing it. But do me a favor and put the text cursor inside a paragraph that has your paragraph style applied to it (but which is showing the wrong font) and then: First, look in the paragraph styles panel and see if there is a + symbol next to the style name. If there is, click the “remove overrides” button (the one with a paragraph symbol with a line through it, at the bottom of the panel). Second, if that doesn’t help, then open the character styles panel and just see if it is set to anything other than None. If it is None, or if nothing is selected, then look at the bottom of the styles panel and see if any character style shows up in little text next to the folder icon. If you see any style name there, it means it’s being applied through some automatic formatting (such as nested styles or grep styles or line styles).
