Indesign Units and Measurements

I have set my inDesign cs6 preferences for Units and Measurements to inches. I did this using a blank document, then closed the program which is supposed to be the steps to making the default setting. However, many times when I go to make a new document, it shows the page size in points again. I’ve checked the preferences to see if something changed, but it still shows the setting as inches. Any ideas on how to get the new pages to stay at inches?

      Thanks,
      Lora

Are you saying that sometimes the document is created in inches and sometimes in points? That would be very odd.

If you change it while no docs are open, it should stick. Though if you open a template or an old document, it won’t have changed. Changing the prefs only changes the defaults for new documents you create.

If you choose the Web intent in the new doc dialog box, the measurements will be changes to Pixels, however.

Yes, after I’ve gone in and set the units to inches in the preferences, I will be able to create new pages that show up using inches for a while, but after some time, when I try to create a new document is reverts back to showing points, even though the preferences are still set to inches.

Once this starts happening, the only thing I can do is close out of inDesign, relaunch and setup the preferences again – until the next time it defaults.

That is wacky. Perhaps the preferences file has become corrupted. I would recommend rebuilding your preferences (search for rebuild preferences on the site to find how if you don’t know) and start over.

curious if rebuilding prefs fixed your problem?

I have rebuilt the preferences in the past and it works for a while but the issue keeps returning. Sometimes restarting and resetting the “Units & Increments” preference within inDesign will work for a while as well. It seems a bit sporadic. I have only experienced this in CS6.

      Thanks

‘Tis a mystery! I’ve never heard of this kind of preferences problem before.

Well, that would be incorrect. See David’s initial reply on how it should be done.

Whether that solves anything or not, I don’t know; I just wanted to point out a potential problem.

Placing graphics into Indesign sometimes changes the units of measurement too – often only the horizontal or vertical, not both. So you can end up with the horizontal units being points and the vertical units being millimetres.

We work on publications which incorporate a lot of third party supplied ads and while it doesn’t happen often, it does happen enough to be annoying. I’ve never worked out the exact circumstances in which this happens, but it has been an issue with Indesign for as long as I can remember.

This is probably not what is happening here, but worth knowing about for sure.

That’s crazy, Steve. I can’t think of what would cause that. Maybe some third-party plug-in you have installed? I’ve never heard of placing a graphic changing the ruler measurements. Never.

I agree Dave, it certainly is crazy. It has happened to most the people in our Studio at one time or another, but not all of them. We work with the ruler units in millimetres and whenever this happens, it is points that one of the ruler measurements will change to.

We run the EasyCatalog plug-in for catalogue work, and it is the catalogues that receive all the supplied ads, but I never thought to associate it with that.

But as I said, it happens infrequently enough to not to be too worried about it. It has been happening at least since Indesign CS3.
