      Greetings!

As the topic title indicates, I’m new to the world of InDesign.

Due to some budgetary limitations, I’m trying to learn the basics on InDesign CS3. I’m trying to work through Deke McClelland’s Adobe Indesign CS3 One-on-One. For the most part, this is working well. From time to time, though, I get lost in the minutiae and can’t seem to get unstuck.

Case in point, I am having trouble on a lesson that requires me to add two full-spread ruler guides for the page numbers. I am able to add the first guide, but when I follow the directions to duplicate the first guide to create the second guide, it simply moves the first guide. For anyone that might have this book, I’m on Step 14 at the bottom of page 22. The directions read as follows:

“Drag a horizontal guilde from the top ruler to the bottom of the page, where the Y value in the control palette reads 55p0. (Because no guide was previously selected, the Y value is faint.) Midway into the drag, press and holde the Ctrl key (or command on the Mac). Then, with the newest guide selected, highlight the Y value (55p0) in the control palette, change it to 56p6, and press Alt+Enter. The result is two guides that span the entire master page spread and define the upper and lower boundaries of the page numbers.”

I think my problem is that I’m not sure how to make sure I have the first guide selected. I’m using the cursor that is the solid black arrow, described in the tool bar as the selection tool. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      Hello Ian

I don’t know if I am going to be any help to you – unfortunately I don’t get to these forums too often.

Here is something that I didn’t know until recently that might help you…

Imagine being in a screen with a two-page spread in front of you. If you pull down a page guide from the ruler and drag it onto one of the pages, that guide will span the space on that one page only. So if you want a second one on the other page you have to rinse and repeat, so to speak.

However, if you pull down a guide from the ruler and drop it onto the actual pasteboard and not onto any page, you will get a full length ruler guide that spans the complete layout: two pages plus the complete spread to the extreme edges.

Similarly, you can pull down the ruler guide and by holding down the CTRL key you will automatically convert that guide into a full layout guide instead of a simple page guide.

My apologies if I misunderstood your question, but if this tip helps anyone on this forum…
