InDesign Multilevel Numbering Problem

I have managed to get multilevel numbering working in my document (let’s not talk about how long that took).

But now I have this problem:

My numbering happily works up until 8.2.2, but the next number, which should be a level 2 topic, has a random ‘r’ in place of the number, instead of appearing as 8.3. Then the level 1 number after that appears as 19 and goes on accurately from there, if accurate was 19, 19.1, 20, 20.1 etc.

      8. Level 1
      8.0 Level 2
      8.1 Level 2
      8.2 Level 2
      8.2.1Level 3
      8.2.2 Level 3
      r.0 Level 2
      19. Level 1

I’m using InDesign CC 2015 on a Mac.

Has anyone had this issue before and has a workaround that doesn’t involve making a new paragraph style?

r?! That is weird. Are you sure it has the right paragraph style, and there’s no local overrides? I can’t figure out how or why it would say “r”. Too odd.

Yeah it’s really weird. I’ve checked that there’s no overrides on the para style, and I haven’t applied any particular character style to that text. Blerg.

I managed to get it fixed! I hadn’t applied a particular list to my bullets, so once I applied a single list style to each of the bullet para styles it synced up and now they’re all numbered correctly. Why there was the issue on ‘default’ mode I don’t know, I’m just glad it’s fixed.
