      Hello all!

I’m having issues with some translated manuals I’m working on at my job. We have Spanish, French and German translated manuals I work on in InDesign. We send the English version to our translators as IDML files and when I get them back, I convert them to regular documents within each language version of the book. Since these languages alter the layout of each book somewhat significantly, I have to update the index for each one. However, when I go to update the French book’s index for example, it converts all of my index text back into English.

So far I have tried to change the language option under Paragraph Styles and Character Styles to French while highlighting the contents of the index, and that doesn’t seem to solve the problem. Is there something I’m missing or doing incorrectly? I talked to someone at Adobe, and they said that I would have to download the correct language version of InDesign to fix this (French InDesign for French, etc), which sounds extremely tedious and confusing to me. I would love an expert’s advice on how to best handle this!

You have to use different Paragraf Style for each language – to create different Index’es and TOC.

Is it possible that the translator for that langauge has forgotten to tell their CAT tool to include the supplementary text like indexes, footnotes etc?
I know some CAT tools have the option to include or exclude different parts of the text content of IDML files.

Edit: and if it works OK for some languages and not others, then I don’t think that suggestion of using a language-specific version of ID for each version of the publication is the answer.

I have set the language to French throughout the entire French book under each paragraph style, but that doesn’t seem to be helping. The Index has all of the terms in English still and I’m wondering if I have to re-build the entire index from the translated version now.

The translator translated the index and TOC to French, but when I update the index it converts all of the keywords back to English.
