InDesign CS6 Freezing

Hello All, I have a souped up mac I bought last year and run indesign on it for all my graphics. Half way through a project, I've notice my InDesign to be a little sluggish. Every few minutes, the infamous pin wheel appears and freezes my action for a couple seconds. Its beyond annoying. I read some forums and some people say it could be the display preference (which I have on typical display), not enough ram, some say it could be the auto-save featuring, - anyway I'm lost and could use some words of wisdom to help fix this issue. Any thoughts - I'm all ears
