InDesign CS5 hangs when opening files

ID CS5 goes into hanging state upon opening files. Any files. The rainbow ball just keeps turning and turning…. I then force-quit CS5 and reopen it (that part works). But the minute I try to open a file, the ball thingy appears again and it's no go.

I've tried lots of things but nothing has helped so far. I've cleared my ID preferences, deleted the InDesign Recovery and Saved Data folders, ran permissions, cleared my font cache… and nothing.

This freezing problem started today… I have no idea what brought it on. But ID CS5 has been acting strangely (abnormally slow, jittery, laggy, quitting and force-quitting issues) ever since I ran the 7.0.2 update.

I'm on a MacBook Pro 3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, OSX 10.5.8, with 8 GB RAM. 500 GB HD with over 100 GB available.

At this point, CS5 is basically non-functional as I can't get any files to open. I have to go back to CS4. But that won't help me access my existing CS5 files. If I can't open them (in CS5), I also can't export them to the IDML format that will allow me to convert them to CS4.

So what to do? If anyone has any ideas or can shed some light on this, I'd be most grateful.

      Thanks in advance!

      Very mysterious. I would try:

      * Opening the files on a different machine, if possible

      * Or, try logging into a different account (like a guest account) on your computer and trying

      * Make sure you're not opening them off a server

I had this same problem practically since I installed CS5, and I just now found this post that fixed the problem:

Solution #1 worked! It's just a matter of moving a folder onto your Desktop. Weird, but effective.
