This issue started on one computer, and is now spreading throughout a 30 computer mac workgroup.

We use a program called Pagescript to auto flow copy into InDesign templates for out direct mailers and newspaper inserts. Each page is a separate file. Once the copy is flowed and checked, the tags are broken. At this point, on many but not all computers, when trying to open some, but not all, of the files InDesign will crash, almost always with the font window open as if InDesign is trying to locate fonts to use for the file.

That leads us to think it is a font issue, however we use the same fonts extensively in other files that we are creating from scratch with no issues.

Things we have tried to figure out the problem:

Replaced all fonts with a clean copy from a back up location

Replaced all fonts with a copy of the fonts on one of the macs where the files will open

      Saving as an idml

Upgrading os to 10.8 (we are all currently on 10.7)

Upgrading ind to CS6 (we are all currently on cs 5.5)

Upgraded FontAgent Pro software to version 5 (currently on 4)

      Trashed InDesign prefs

Removed FontAgent and put fonts being used into the system fonts folder.

      Ran smasher and font nuke

      Repaired permissions

Removed SING files and ran ID icons update per suggestions covering other crashes.

Removing font boxes, one font at a time, to try and find a culprit. No one font (only two used in doc, one attached to font boxes but not used) appeared to be the culprit, but removing ALL font boxes, whether there was text in it or not, allows the file to open.

Odd that whatever the issue, it is slowly starting to affect more and more machines. It is also only affecting the files that have been started by using Pagescript, does not affect files we start from scratch, even using the same fonts, which are corporate fonts and used extensively.

Posted to adobe forum but haven't gotten anything there. Link to one of the crash reports is on pastebin, link below.

Anyone out there have any thoughts on what else we can try?

Macs in dept run the range from macbook pro, imac, mini to fancy towers. All are either on the exact same os version and IND version or within one or two minor updaters of all others.

Anyone have any thoughts out there?

Very hard to know… but it sounds like Pagescript is the common denominator. Can you say more about it? Is it a script? A plug-in? Have you contacted the developer for help? Have you tried removing pagescript from the machine before opening the IDML file?

Pagescript is a plug in. We have reached out but have yet to get an answer from them.

At first it seemed as if only the machines with pagescript were exempt from the issue, but then we realized that one of the machines without a problem does not have pagescript on it. In addition, the machines with pagescript are now having the problem as well. Some files will open but some will not.

I guess I would try exporting to IDML, then try opening that file on a computer that does not have PageScript or other plug-ins installed, and that has had its preferences rebuilt.

It does sound as though it has more to do with the files themselves than with the particular program or system or fonts. Very weird.
