InDesign CC2019 does not allow you to insert Word .doc files correctly with Static Endnotes ticked (i.e. footnote numbers come out with no character styles and with no superscript).
And this causes a Catch-22 situation.
You see, earlier this year in the forum I’ve been told that .doc is old and I should use .docx files. From experience with dealing with thousands of Word files from different Authors a year, I’ve recognised that .doc files translate far better than .docx and so I convert them to .doc before importing them into InDesign – you see .docx can cause quite a few problems.
So, what is the Catch-22?
If you have been supplied a Word file with Index markers within it and you want to import all the text and create an index, NO INDESIGN CC VERSION RECOGNISES THE INDEX MARKERS UNLESS IT IS A .DOC FILE you are importing. If you import a .docx file with index markers nothing happens. Convert it to a .doc file and it imports correctly.
So, if we abandon using .doc files then Indexes will no longer import. So may be the death of .doc files is still premature, and this also means that InDesign CC2019 still needs to be updated so that it is able to import them.
PS – I know you can import Word files with index markers if you cut and paste. For the book work we do, this is not an option as it is an inaccurate way of working.
