InDesign seems to get more buggy by the day. Now I can set up a document, put it away, try to open it later to work on it and am presented with one of those charming boxes with an exclamation mark and the helpful comment “The document “filename.indd” could not be opened. InDesign cannot open files in the “InDesign(R) CS5 Document” format.

What's all that about? I'm using CS5. Arghhhhh!! There's always something wrong these days. I spend my life searching for answers, deleting prefs, worrying about fonts when all I want to do is get on with this workload. Why can't things be simple?

One of those Apple reports always appears afterwards and makes no sense to someone like me. A lot appears about something called Adobe plugplug but it doesn't say what.

The simple answer to my problem seems to be to quit InD and open it up again. But why have I got to do this 4-5 times a day? Boy am I fed up or what!!

Wow, that sounds bad. I have to tell you that this is not the norm. InDesign isn't getting buggier in general. So it's likely that something is up with your system in general. For example: additional scripts or plug-ins that you may be running/have run. Sometimes stuff gets added to the Scripts or Plug-ins folder and then forgotten about.

Or perhaps corrupt fonts, or corrupt templates that you keep using, or… hm.

Here's a fun trick: Try creating a new user account on your computer and logging into that instead of your normal account. Then run InDesign for a few hours and see if the problems go away. If so, then it's likely that something to do with that user account (perhaps not even related to InDesign!) is causing the issue.

Just to add to what David said, this problem has the hallmarks of an OS-level issue, rather than an application problem, unless it's limited to a specific sest of files. Communcation between the OS, which is supposed to say “Here's an InDesign file!”, and ID, which is supposed to respond “Got it! Thanks!” is getting jumbled up. It certainly sounds like it's not an ID preferences problem, but it's much more likely to be something below the application level.

If you've already cleared font caches and repaired permissions, the “new user account” trick that David suggested is a terrific way to eliminate the application as the source of the problem. If that succeeds, you would do well to get an Apple guru involved, either through their tech support, which is usually pretty good in my experience, or someone local to you.

Thank you so much for the suggestion of setting up a new user. I'll do that and see what happens. Never done it before.
