independent numbering of images and tables in a chapter

I get stuck on the following:

In an article I want to include images (f.i. with anchored text) and with each image I want to have a legend and a number.

      1. to get a numbering that follows the chapter numbering (like “image 3.39” with 3 being the chapter) and the image numbering (39) each chapter resetting and beginning at 1, so 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 …. 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 etc.

      2. to use independent numbering for both tables and images, with independent numbering, so for instance

…(fig. means short for image in Dutch)

For instance in this occurring order – within one chapter:

      fig. 1.1

      fig. 1.2

      table. 1.1

      table. 1.2

      fig. 2.1

      table. 2.1

      table. 2.2

      fig. 3.1

Since one only can use numbering for one item (either images or tables in my case), I cannot solve this.

I have not been able to manage these items properly.

Can this be solved with variables?

I do manage to use variables for a proper naming and numbering of chapters etc. in a non-book document, but not yet for this image and table numbering item.

Maybe someone could be so friendly in helping me out a little bit?

      Thank you in advance.

The variable character for Chapter is the “^H” and the Section character is “^J”. Hence, if you can use section markers for each chapter in order to get the numbering right.
