INDD locking up when adding cross reference

      Hello:

      After clicking an insertion point and clicking on Insert Cross Reference InDesign locks up. Can’t figure out why. All of the other cross references are up to date. There are no errors indicated by preflight. Anyone have suggestions on how to fix this?

      INDD 2021 (16.1), Mac OS 10.14.6 (Mojave), MacBookPro 2019

      When I had this happen it was something from word doc or copying and pasting from internet. I delete paragraphs in and around it and started fresh with all new clean text. Just a thought… (not an expert :-)

      Thanks for the tip. I retyped the text block. Unfortunately it did not work for me.

      Other things I’ve tried that didn’t work:
      • saved the file as an IMDL
      • shut down my computer & restarted
