    In InDesign 5, I’ve created a Book but got serious problems with creating TOC (Table of contents).

    I followed the instructions in InDesign Help (I am a learner)

    The situation is – when I set TOC as described in the Help manual, the program generates just a blank page displaying only the title I gave to TOC (“Contents Table”)

    The book consist of 3 chapters, TOC page and Index page properly saved as .indd documents.

    All pages in the 3 chapters properly numbered from 1 to 98.

    When I hit OK for creating TOC, I can see bar moving and displaying Ch1,Ch2,Ch3 and Index which indicates InDesign does something but the result is not good – just this blank page with only name “ contents” which I’ve entered at the beginning. Nothing else.

    I expected to get name of each chapter and the page where it starts…

    Can someone with good understanding of InDesign , please, direct me
    what exactly to do and create TOC?
    I am total novice and am afraid I am making some silly mistake…
    (I could make TOC by hand but want to learn how to do it with InDesign.)

    Hi Erika,

    Would it be possible for you to post a screenshot of your TOC-Dialog box? Think it would help a lot for us to understand your situation more and thus give prompt assistance.

    Well Gfx-Dzine, as I've said in my enquiry, it generates just a blank page with the word “Contents” which I entered when starting TPC.

    I use the standard settings in different variants – none works so far.

    I suspect there is a small thing I am missing snd wonder if someone who has done this TOC

    can tell me exact steps he/she follows to produce proper TOC…

    Here you can find screenshots of the creating TOC process in ID CS5 – it works as expected, as at the end I got the TOC I wanted.

    Erika,

    The screenshots RoManuV posted were the kind I meant if you could post. This would give people wanting to help insight into the settings you used in your specific situation and so maybe able to deduct where the problem is ;)

    RoManuV – THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH INDEED!

    Did my TOC perfectly.

    By the way I agree what Gfx-Dzine suggests and in future will keep record (shots) related to any problems I have.
