Hi David. My apologies, you are probably so tired of this line of enquiries. I have a .docx file which I need to import into InDesign, however, when I do it loses all the footnotes (hundreds of them). The only fix seems to be saving the .docx file as a .doc or .rtf file. This works perfectly, all the footnotes are there, however saving to .doc or .rtf loses the text formatting ie bold and italic. Any ideas how to get around that one??

      Thank you

      Richard

I always convert Word files into RTF and never lost any character formating.
Try opening Word file with LibreOffice and then convert it into RTF.

When a Word import goes wrong, my first troubleshooting step is to do a Save As from Word, to clear out any gunk that might have built up. If it still doesn’t work, then I switch from .doc to .docx (or vice versa). I rarely use RTF, but that should work okay.

Importing the footnotes in your .docx should work just fine. Strange.

You might try Maggying the Word doc and saving as a new file, see if that solves any problems. I have a chapter in my Smarter Workflows with Word and InDesign course (just published on LinkedIn) that’s all about quick fix techniques, and RTF roundtrip and Maggying are a couple of them.

To Maggy a file, open it in Word, Select all, Shift>Left Arrow to deselect the final return, Copy, create a new Word file, Paste, Save with a different name. That removes some internal corruption. Worth a shot.
