Hi All, First post here in ID Secrets.
I have a problem with a TOC for image captions. They are not in the correct order when referencing the caption on the same page. See images linked here. (hopefully you can see them).

I know that captions for Figs 65 and 66 are more to the left than the others but I want to retain this arrangement.

Having looked on the web it appears due to the order that ID sees the caption frames on the page. Captions to the left are ‘seen’ first regardless of the location of the text anchor. (Seems crazy to me. Surely the text anchor location should be the reference for order?)
Anyway the question is: How to work around the problem? I know I can manipulate the text in the TOC but that will get overridden next time the TOC rebuilds. I want a ‘better’ solution than that. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,
      Gerald

It’s a tricky problem… Anne-Marie wrote about it here (see also the comments section):

      Hi David,

Yes, I saw this post and the comments section, but cant see how it provides a solution to my problem (unless I am missing something here).

I dont have indents in the caption text frames that complicate the issue. It seems to me the issue is simply the left to right placement of the caption text frames on the page versus the location of the text anchors. See the pic of the page layout (link following)

      https://www.dropbox.com/s/hf5d7lldhkg65lv/P%2031%20Layout%20showing%20caption%20text%20frames%20-grouped%20with%20images.PNG?dl=0

The only workaround I can see at the moment is to allow the TOC to be built out of order and then select the offending TOC section and reorder using the ‘SortParagraph’ script.
Is there another method (you know about) that I can apply on the page itself so the TOC gets built correctly?

      Thanks, Gerald

There may be a script that would let you build the TOC more elegantly, but I think the sortparagraphs script is a good workaround.

You might check this script to see if it can help any: https://www.id-extras.com/products/livetoc/

Without seeing your object styles and anchored object options, it’s hard to advice with precision, but for sure, playing around with object and paragraph styles, you should be able to extend your caption frame up to the left…

Hi Vinny, Thanks for the reply. However it looks like you haven’t anchored the caption frames into the main text as yet (so they travel with the text). I tried to set out as you have suggested and set a text wrap to the main text frame so that the text of the captions are forced into the empty gutter area. However once anchored text wrap of the main text frame is ignored?

        Hi Gerald
        Yes I anchored everything indeed.

Object styles will be your best friends here.
For the aside caption, just add left inset spacing in your “aside caption” object style, along with handy settings such as custom position, aligned to bottom, etc.

Note that instead of grouping images and captions, you could use two different and consecutive anchored objects. But it’s your workflow choice…

Baseline grid would be pretty handy too, since smart alignment won’t work with anchored objects..
