If text is selected, it inverts the color. Can I preview colors un-inverted?

Something that’s always bugged me… maybe you know of a trick for this.

Say I type a sentence and I want to change the color of one word.
I don’t have a color in mind, I wanna play around with it, maybe click 20 colors in a row to see if one jumps out.

I highlight the word with my text tool. I click a color using swatches or eyedropper, whatever.
I don’t see the word in the color I chose… instead I see the inverted color.
Like if I click the cyan swatch the word will appear in orange.

I must then manually click somewhere else to de-select the text, decide if I like it,
re-select it, then click a different color. Kind of tedious… how can I preview the true color
of selected text, rather than the inverted color?

I would temporarily make the selection a new character style, then you can change the colour of the style and see it update in the text.

If you have enough monitor space, this is a great use for WINDOW MENU>>Arrange>>New Window for [Your File]. Work in one window, watch the changes in the other.

I agree with the previous comments, but I’ll add: Adobe (finally) fixed this in InDesign CC! It doesn’t reverse the text anymore. Big relief.

David, you’re right! I saw that but it didn’t click with me. In InDesign CC, selected text is highlighted in pale blue.

It’s still hard to get a really great idea of how the new color looks until you click off of it, but much better than the older reversed text highlight.

Nice, I’m glad to see I wasn’t crazy, someone else must have wanted this if they changed it in CC.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone. The character style and second window are both good fixes.
Usually I just settle for changing the whole sentence by selecting the text box then the little text fill button.

      Thanks again~
