      Hi there

I am working on a book and the authour has images in the word document. If i ‘place’ the whole book from MS WORD will the images be the same quality as in the word document? Or do i have take them out of word and back in by other means?

      Thank you

      Andy,

From my experience the image quality that comes out of word is pretty low resolution so I always ask for the author/client for the original images, whether for print or digital, because the images that come out of Word are usually too low quality to do anything with. I do usually flow in the book into InDesign with the images as they’re at least great for placement, but if you can get the author to email you the original images (as Jpeg’s not in another Word doc, I’ve had that happen) that would probably be best.

Thank you Andy, that sounds like good advice. Much appreciated! Thanks and best wishes

Yeah–the pics inserted into Word files are usually crap. And it’s not the original art. It’s placed art.

        You definitely want the originals.

If it’s a Word 2013 file, we often rename it to a zip file. When you open the zip, the images can be found in a subfolder. This, in case no one can give you the originals.

Note for the zip to work it has to be a .docx file.

Once you see this .docx or .pptx or anything from word with an x then you can rename to .zip and unpack the file to get the images inserted.

But that process will give you PNGs. So you have to convert them to your desired format.
