For most of my printing needs, I use an inkjet printer. It’s quick and easy and gives me no hassles. But sometimes I have a job that really requires a bit more permanence and then I turn to my ageing HP MP5 laser printer.
Except that it doesn’t seem to want to co-operate with InDesign CS4 (can’t comment on earlier versions of InDesign as haven’t tried for ages). When I click on the Print button, the little light on the printer begins flashing, indicating that it is receiving data from the computer but, after a while, the light stops flashing and the printer goes back to its idle status. There is no indication from the computer that the job has failed. It just evaporates.
When I export the InDesign doc as a PDF, that will print to the HP without any hassles. But why do I need to add this extra step? Shouldn’t it print directly from InDesign?
I am using a 2007 24-inch iMac running OS 10.6.3 (Snow Leopard). Perhaps the problem is the age of the HP printer? Dunno. Just confused.
