I wish InDesign did this…

I have a lot of documents that are about annual events. And of course each year a new event comes up, so I update the previous years document. But before I do that, I package the documents to my current WIP folder. As I don't want to lose last years document for whatever reason, waste not want not. I keep files just in case, back them up, and never overwrite old files with new content.

So there I am packaging the file as always, and selecting my WIP folder for 2010, and I go to my Events folder. Then I key in my folder name for the package, “Annual Golf 2010”. Then it packages it up, and the file is there, Annual Golf 2009.indd…

I think it might be nice to be given the opportunity to rename your file, as I would like it to be Annual Golf 2010.indd

So to get around this, I go to the folder, close my document in InDesign, then change the file name to what I need, then reopen.

It's just a small thing – but it would greatly improve the workflow.

Yes, I wish that InDesign had a much more robust “package” feature! I think there are a lot of these kinds of things they could be doing to help workflow.

I suppose it's a pretty rare complaint to Adobe, wouldn't it. I don't know anyone to complain about the packaging feature as much as I do :D

I don't just want more control – I want full control of what I am packaging for print.

I suppose I could just do a Save As into the new folder. Then use the Copy Links command in the Links Panel, then create a folder called Links.

That would do the same, but it wouldn't copy the fonts, which I like to keep with each job. So it's a bit of hit and miss isn't it.

Ah well, I guess I just have to keep on truckin'

I always use “save as” for the new version. Sometimes when I export to pdf for our RIP it will try to assign the old file name to the pdf…that is a bit odd.

I wish I could click on an entry in the TOC and go there in the document. Like I can in the PDF it generates, but within InDesign. Can I do that?

A bit of a “yes” and a bit of a “no”.

Bookmarks work exactly as in the PDF. Hyperlinks are not clickable (perhaps they are in CS5, in the special “Presentation mode”) but if you click inside a hyperlink, you'll see its definition in the Hyperlink panel is selected. Click on the right-pointing arrow at the bottom of the Hyperlink panel to go to the destination.

(And you can even set a hotkey to “Hyperlink:Go to Destination”.)
