      Hello everybody,

      https://img163.imagevenue.com/loc424/th_616132329_20170928_183429_122_424lo.jpg

This must be easy to do for the experts here, but I haven’t been able to copy this header to the book I am writing in InDesign.
(apologies if a similar question has been posted here …)

I would like to add to the top of each page a red colored bar, to which I can add a title in white (different titles on each page).
The bar has to start on the outside of the page and continue to half of the page. The text in this bar must not start on the outside, but after circa 2cm.

Hopefully the image I have uploaded will show up here. The header I would like to add looks very similar to this one.

As you can tell from the way I describe my request, I have absolutely no idea how to do this. :-)
Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!

      Cheers,

      Robert

Go to your Master Page and create a text box the size and position you want make sure it extends past the edge of the page by 5mm ir your bleed amount.
Then fill it with the red colour
Add text eg Page Header to the frame.

Create a Paragraph Style for the Page Header text, left aligned, character colour white etc. Apply this to the text

Then format the text frame Object > Text Frame Options (or Cmd-B) Set the INSET SPACING left to 2mm and right to the bleed plus 2mm, set Vertical Justification to Centre
IF the text is not vertically aligned then change the bottom INSET SPACING to centre the text correctly.

Now go back to your layout page COMMAND CLICK the text box and add your text to each page.

      … When I wrote: “So simple! …”, I didn’t say: “Simplistic! …”

      What about variables use? ;-)

Michel, please don’t leave short replies like this… it is not helpful for the reader or anyone else. It is not simple or simplistic to someone who does not know the tool well.

        David, it’s not a short reply! ;-)

It means the op could make more researches about the use of “Headers” in an ID layout! … and so make some researches about “Variables”!

I’m always surprised to see people use a software by ignoring so many things that can be spotted in the “Menus” of the soft!!!

My granny always said to me: “La curiosité est un vilain défaut! … ” and me to answer: “… Mais pas les pruneaux!” [ to make a french rhyme! =D ]

        … But, well, it’s just a personal feeling !!

How about using a Hyperlink-Cross Reference
Create the Hyperlink text anchor of the text you want in the custom header. Then insert the Cross-Reference in the custom header and apply the Paragraph Style to get the text how you want it.

Robert, it’s a bit unclear to me which part of this you are having trouble with. Is it making running headers? Or the reversed text in the bar that extends automatically?

There are a lot of different pieces that come together in your design.

I’ve made a test file for you here that you can open and play with.

This uses Paragraph Rules for the reversed text that extends automatically, and Text Variables for adding the headers on the master page.

Here are some articles on these topics:

Thank you all very much for your help. Excellent!

Graham, thanks to your reply I managed to create a page-title that I can use. It’s not 100% identical to the photo I posted, but I am very happy with it anyway.

Obi-wan, I understand what you are saying. But I really have zero knowledge when I comes to this. Something like “Create a Paragraph Style” I’m sure is the easiest thing for you, but I had never heard of a ‘Paragraph Style’ before and at first assumed it had to be a paragraph in a book, which was not was I was looking for. I feel a bit stupid asking a simple question on a board of experts, but on the other hand, that is the reason why I asked my question here. And I did indeed do a lot of searches before asking, but the terminology used in the answers raised even more questions for me.

Thanks also to David. Your file is exactly what I was looking for, awesome!

Once again a BIG thanks to you all.

      Robert
