I’m creating an internal company magazine/newsletter and it contains hyperlinks to urls for easy access to internal documentation, etc… The magazine will be distributed as a PDF and the urls will be hyperlinked text CLICK HERE, SUBMIT YOUR IDEAS, etc… Is there any way to make the hyperlinked text PRINT as a URL instead of the formatted text? In other words, be clickable in th ePDF but when printed, show the https://gotothislink.net

      Thanks.

Not without a lot of work. I think you could probably figure out a way using scripting to display one layer and print a different layer, for example… and then you would have to have duplicates of everything on two layers, etc… I don’t think it would be much fun. :)

@David: Would conditional text work for something like this or no?

I haven’t worked with hyperlinks or conditional text enough to know.

Do you mean you want it to appear one way when you print from InDesign and different when you export a PDF? Or do you mean you want the PDF to look different on screen and in print?

@David: That’s what I was wondering from the OPs original post. It sounds like the former, and why I asked.

        Hopefully Tom can clarify.

I was hoping to embed both inside the PDF. So when you open the PDF you see the clickable, embedded link. Then if you printed it, it would print the URL instead. But now I am seeing the craziness of asking acrobat to do that. So, could conditional text help me be able to do both from one file right from InDesign? Click Print and I get printed URL and then Export to PDF and I get a clickable link.

Tom–it’s a bit more complicated, but David is the expert so I will defer to him.

But–we (where I work) are currently working on a job where the book has pull quotes. The pull quotes are supposed to appear in the printed book, but not in the eBook. We are using conditional text for that. Since one is able to show/hide conditional text, this solution may work for you.

But again–David is the expert and hopefully he will chime in again soon.

The conditional text was my first thought. I think it would work for what you want.

I have a working file here that will work if the url appears in a single line, not within body text. I’m not sure how this could be hoodwinked into a workable reflowing of text scenario.

But this is how I’d start attempting it.

      IDML file

      Working PDF
      https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/17210757/Test%20Interactive%20Hyperlink.idml

I made a separate text frame and put in “Click here to find out more!”

And in the text frame it says “www.google.com”

I then anchored the text frame with “Click Here to Find out More!”

And made that an interactive button.

The interactive button is anchored above the the text in the text frame.

I then set the Interactive Button to not print via it’s dialog.

And now you see the text in the PDF “Click here to find out more!” but it prints “www.google.com”

Let me know if you need any more information on this technique.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions. The first issue rolled out as-is (interactive PDF) and the second issue will hopefully be cooler with regards to the links. I’m diving in to the suggestions from all 3 of you, so THANKS!
