    How to get multiple numbered lists to start with the #1. and NOT restart the numbers from the previous list.
    I have a book (over 500 pgs) with over 100 numbered lists in it and each list HAS to start with 1.
    It’s making me crazy, when I get the first number to show up as one, so do all the rest!

    You can set the number settings in the preferences. When you want an numbered list to start again with nr 1, you have to right click an choose for restart numbering again.

    I’ve tried that, it turns all the numbers into a text list, the number are no longer live. I have over 500 pages to assemble and over 700 lists in which more than half are numbered.

    Okay, I know what your problem is, but after that you have done it with ‘Number List”, you can choose in the menu Paragraph styles at the right corner menu item for: convert number list to text.

    So what you can do is that you make a Paragraph style with ‘List’ and a duplicate with ‘List nr 1’
    Type for example: a enter, b enter, c enter and give this the paragraph ‘List’. Everything is now numbered from 1,2,3 etc. I guess you have an blanc enter between your next numbered list, what has to begin with 1. again. So you have to make another paragraph ‘Body’ without all the numbering issues.
    Then type the example again: a enter, b enter, c enter and give this the ‘List nr 1’ and that is now numbered as 4, 5, 6 so now you put your cursor in the alinea where nr 1 has to be shown and then right click on the text and choose ‘restart numbering’. Now you see a ‘+’ in the Paragraphstyle because you edited it’s original code, but that is what we want, so now you choose in the right corner of the Paragraph menu ‘Redefine style’.

    I don’t know how the book’s layout is, but with the find and GREP function you kan do a lot of automatic layout. And when you’re finished you can choose cover number ‘list’ to text

    If all of your numbered lists are to stay in one text box each you could set the list to not continue across stories. Then each new text frame will start over. If you needed one list to carry over you could use a threaded text frame.

    I have a number list that goes to 19 and 3 different A. B. C. sublists, each of these have to start at A.. and for some strange reason, the first one wants to start at ‘H’. When I reset it, it starts at A. but the next number in the which should be 4 resets to ‘1.’.

      You will need a new paragraph for each additional sequence (e.g. If you want to go to 1.A.a, you will need three paragraph styles. One for the 1, the A and the a.) For sublists you need to make sure each numbering section is in the same list with a level higher than the previous sequence and you’ll need to check “continue from previous number” and “restart numbering at this level after:” and choose “any previous level”
