      Hello everyone!

I have been working on a large project in InDesign that involves high–resolution images; and I am starting to experience some noticeable lag. The performance drop is especially noticeable when zooming or moving between pages; which really slows down my workflow.

I have already tried a few basic fixes, like switching to a lower display quality (Typical Display) for images; but it’s not quite enough. Does anyone have any more advanced tips for optimizing performance with large image files in InDesign: ?? Should I be downsizing images before importing them, or is there a specific file format that tends to work better: ??

Additionally, are there any settings in Preferences or workarounds that you would recommend for keeping the project light and responsive without sacrificing too much image quality: ??

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance for helping out !!

      Best regards,

      David Miller

Are your images embedded or linked?

Are your images all 72ppi actual resolution (the one you set in Photoshop, as opposed to effective resolution, when you scale it down in the layout to make it high res). If so, then they’re all essentially embedded in the InDesign file, as it makes the full size previews when you place the images. So, when you zoom and scroll, InDesign has to recalculate the display from a lot of information. I’ve never tested it for real, but my hunch is that could have something to do with it. Here’s something I wrote on the topic a long time ago (nothing’s changed): https://creativepro.com/how-resolution-affects-image-proxy-quality/

What file format are your images? I recently had a situation with lots of what I thought were jpgs slowing things WAY down. I can’t remember whether they were saved as “JPEG 2000” or “Large Document Format”, but as soon as I switched them to normal files (jpg or psd) they were fine. Clearly INDD was having to generate preview thumbnails of very large images every time they were displayed.

I always reduce the size of large image files before placing them. It helps.

Will this document be printed? If not, you can use a lower resolution than 300. PNG is best if this is for digital only. JPG is best for print.
