How to find/highlight word(s) with multiple font styles?

      Hello everybody,

as I have not yet been successful with finding a solution nor here, nor on Adobe forum, I am creating a new topic and I look forward to hearing the suggestions from local community!

PROBLEM: A long text placed into Indesign CC (from Microsoft Word) has multiple instances of (different) words, where these words, throughout the document, have multiple font styles (bold/italic/regular) applied.

For example, a word “actionable” (not only this word, this may occur in any word in the document) is within the text as act(i)ion(/i)able, actio(b)n(/b)able, actionable etc.

What I need is to be able to identify, highlight such words so that I can decide which font style shall be applied to the respective word according to the context.

I was told that the GREP is not an option since it cannot differentiate between font styles…

      Any ideas?

      Thanks in advance!

Are you saying that there are font and size changes inside the words? For example, “cat” (where the “a” is bold)? And you want to find words that are inconsistent like this?

A script could probably do it. GREP is hard, yes. But actually another solution could be to export the text from InDesign as “Tagged Text” and then use GREP inside a app such as TextWrangler or BBEdit, which supports grep. Tricky, but possible.

David, thank you for your input.

Yes, there are words that have multiple styles within (see link) and what I need is to be able to identify/highlight such “messed up” words within a 1000+ pages text..

One option might be to click the + icon in the upper-right corner of the Paragraph Styles panel (in InDesign CC 2018 and later). That would highlight all local formatting. Would that help?

Nope, it just highlights all the text.

What I mean is that the there are words like these (square highlight is done by me):

And I want to find a way that Indesign/TextWrangler can help me find/highlight such words and then I can decide whether the word is supposed to be in italics/regular.

Yes, I understand. But if that highlights everything in blue, then it means that you have local formatting (formatting on top of the paragraph style) everywhere. So one solution is to change the font and size of the text until it matches the paragraph style. Or, maybe easier, change the paragraph style definition to match the current text.

For example, if the main text is Times Roman 12 point, then change the Basic Paragraph Style to match that. Then the blue highlighting should go away for everything except the differences

David, thank you so much, this is the best solution I have found yet! Now I can highlight all the words easily and change their style as desired.

        Once again, thank you!
