      Hello,

I have a problem that I am not able to put very well in a question: I designed a book, A4 format. On the interior cover (cover 2) there will be a pocket holding a CD that accompanies the book. That pocket will be half A4 (the inferior half of the cover). On the cover there is an A4 image covering the whole surface and on the CD pocket the inferior half of the same image will be reproduced.

Can anybody please give me some advice how to design this CD pocket? I mean how should I set up the page for it – I don't even know how to ask the question.

And of course, I could not find “google help” for the same reason – I don't know how to ask.

Thank you very much for support, I am rather under pressure and…

I would advise you to talk to your print supplier as it is they who will be doing the print and finish, they will tell you exactly what they need from you.

Save the cover as a PDF, then place the pdf on the “2nd cover.” Position it properly, then Cut it, then select the smaller frame (the size of the pocket) and choose Edit > Paste Into. It should be cropped properly. Does that help?

However, ultimately, I agree with Tim that you need to check with the printer to make sure you have the right specs for printing on that pocket.

      Thank you Tim and David,

As a matter of fact my problem is not how to place an image on the pocket, that part is the easiest.

What I wanted to know is how to design the pocket itself as a document, i.e. the margins, their sizes, will the margins be glued on the cover after they are folded, or is there no folding (the pocket is a plain paper whose margins are simply glued), …

The problem is that I have not a direct contact with the printer, my client takes the files I provide him and lends them to the printer himself. He asked the printer about the pocket and could not get an useful answer. Communication here is rather heavy and slow, that is why I am trying to inform myself from people that already did this operation on their behalf and know how to it must be done.

Thank you again, if you can think of some more useful hints I shall be very grateful.

The printer is going to cut this using a die, and most printers are happy to supply a template for the designer so they don't have problems at production time. That would be the first thing to try.

The backup plan is to lay out the piece with the image sized as you have it, allowing at least 7 mm bleed, preferably 10 mm. Add to that a slug of another 10 mm on the three sides that will be glued (not the top). When you export the PDF, include the bleed, crop marks and slug. The printer will still have to figure out what to do with it, but that should be enough “spare” to meet any glueing process I've come across.

Thank you Allan, your answer is extremely helpful for me and I am going to apply it at once for my project.

      Thank you a thousand times.
