I have InDesign I have my ruler units set to inches. With the cursor inside a data entry field, e.g. X:, Y:, W: or H: fields in the control panel, typing up-arrow or down-arrow changes the value in exact steps of 0.0625 inches. Shift-up-arrow and shift-down-arrow changes the value in exact steps of 0.25 inches (4x larger). What would be really helpful is if shift-up-arrow/down-arrow used 0.2 inches, which is the baseline grid in my document. Is there any way to make that so?

      Cheers!

      Brad

Go to your preferences>units and increments and change accordingly – then stop using inches!

I’d love to use parsecs, but what’s the use?! :-)

However, to your point, Preferences > Units has keyboard increments for Cursor Key, Baseline Shift, Size/Leading and Kerning/Tracking, but those don’t affect (as far as I can tell) the data entry fields in the control panel, which is what I’m asking about. I must be missing something.

Look higher up in that dialog box. No parsecs but the Ruler Units will help. :-)

Good morning. I hate to be a pain, but the issue is with the data entry fields in the control panel (i.e. the toolbar that goes across the top) and what happens when you click into one of those fields (e.g. the Y: field) and press Up/Down Arrow or Shift Up/Down Arrow. There is a default increment associated with that operation and I’m wondering how to change it. The default (when the units are inches) is 1/16 inch and 1/4 inch. I’d like to change the 1/4 inch to 0.2 inch (corresponding to my baseline grid).

      Cheers!

Another place this occurs is in the Paragraph Style Options panel > Indents and Spacing. Each of the indent fields and the space before/after fields work similarly. Click in one, then press Up/Down Arrow or Shift Up/Down Arrow and you get a precise default increment. I am just wondering how to change those defaults from 1/16 inch and 1/4 inch to, say, 1/10 inch and 1/5 inch?

Ah! Sorry, I didn’t read your original post correctly.
I don’t think you can do this in InDesign, but you could use a script. I think this one might work: https://creativepro.com/topic/how-to-assign-shortcut-to-cursor-key-increments/

Thanks David, I”ll check that out. And one day I’m going to pursue my new career in writing InDesign scripts! :-)

In ID Prefs, tab 7, part 4, point 1! Change it here! (hope I’m clear! =D )

Michel, that is helpful when you want to change the arrow key on the keyboard. But I think it does not change the increment value in the panels. For example, if you select a frame and click the Up or Down arrow buttons for the X or Y field in the Control panel, it is not changed.

… and just up/down-arrow (not shift)!
