How to Automatically Create Document Sections based on a Paragraph Style?

      Hi Folks …

I am currently typesetting a 400 page book using InDesign CC 2019.

Whenever there is heading using “Section Title” Paragraph Style, I want to create a New Section on that page, so it appears in the header (where there is a Master Page text field with a “Current Section” marker). This field will display the current section until a new “Section Title” heading is encountered, at which a further section will begin.

So far I have created the sections manually, believing that the manuscript was pretty finalised, but it appears there are changes to come, which means the Sections now begin on the wrong page, and I have to manually remove the old sections and insert new ones to sync with the new Section Title page locations.

Is there a way to do this automatically in InDesign, either with a built-in feature I haven’t encountered yet, or with a script? My skill level is kind of intermediate I guess but I haven’t used some of the power features yet.

      Thanks in advance!
      Richard

You need a text frame on top of the master page. There you can insert a text variable for running header (from the type menue). And in the definition of the running header variable you choose your paragraph style Section title. But be aware that InDesign looks for those variables as if they were a single character. InDesign will show all letters in one line inside the frame.

Thanks for your reply. I’ll give that a go!
