How can I preview Indesign files I'm about to open (or in windows)?

I feel like I'm missing something. When I open compatible files in photoshop or illustrator, I get a preview. In InDesign, I get no preview even though there's a big empty area in the open dialogue where one might fit.

Failing that, I wouldn't mind being able to see small thumbnail previews of my files in Windows explorer, but changing views here just resizes the usual pink ID icon.

I thought I read somewhere that InDesign creates jpg previews of your files, where are these used?

      In Bridge.

is Bridge very useful? I always felt like it must be some sort of bloated way over overcomplicating the process of opening files. I always skip it during a new install, should I bother with it?

If you want to see a preview of your InDesign files… then yes.

Or you could try a third party app https://www.code-line.com/softw…..akpeekpro/

Gotcha. Well, appreciate the info guys. I'll probably just live without, I was hoping for being able to see the preview within windows or within the file–>open dialogue. I'll just name files more descriptively :p

Bridge is VERY useful, *especially* in Windows. Think of it as an alternative to Windows Explorer, which it is. You can use Bridge to navigate to files/folders, create new folders, move stuff around, run searches, save Favorites, and in all that while never touch a CS file. Works perfectly fine with all your files on your hard drive.

Another thought, if you're using CS5 or 5.5, is to boot up InDesign and then use the (new) MiniBridge panel to browse and preview InDesign files before opening them, which you can do by double-clicking there. I have a MiniBridge custom workspace that has the panel sized very large so it's easier to move around in. MiniBridge will show previews of InDesign files; at least the first page for older versions, and the first two (or more, depending on what you set in Prefs) for CS5 and 5.5 files.

      Great tip Anne-Marie! I like :D

I've been using Mini-Bridge more and more, I'm really warming to it :)

I'll try the minibridge thing, though do I need to install bridge to make it work?

I wish I could say I'm sold on bridge but it sounds like I can do all of that with windows explorer, except the preview.

Yes you need to install Bridge, but unless you *uninstalled* it at some point, it should be there already. Installing any product of the CS or any flavor of the CS automatically installs Bridge.

When you start browsing in MiniBridge, you'll see that it needs to start up Bridge in the background.
