How can I make a style for this?

The link below is a screenshot of something I made using two different text boxes. It doesn’t work well, because it doesn’t flow with the text around it. I want to create something like this to use for numbered headings or interviews, so that the number is in a box with a larger font size. Is that possible? Maybe with a paragraph style? Thanks.

It’s tricky to make a number in a square like that based on all text styles. It’s possible, but takes some work. It is easier to make it as a separate box. But if you want it to flow with the text, then you should anchor it or make it an inline object.

I agree with David. Anchoring it would be a lot easier.

I tried the hard way and it is hard. I made the box a zapf dingbbat (black box) and made it white with a black frame around it. And made it a character style. I then made the number and kerned it back.

      Both require character styles.

For the paragraph style I used the main head, and played with the left indent so the head would align properly.

I even tried to use a drop cap style on the head (for the dingbat box) and kerning back the number. That worked, but it takes some work, as you’d need to key in the character for the box and the number.

I think it would be a lot easier to anchor the box and number.

Thanks guys! I’ve never used anchored objects, but I’m experimenting now. The link below shows a screenshot using an anchor. The one on the left uses the anchor, and the one on the right is using two separate text boxes.

Can I make the anchored object look like the one on the right? With the alignment?

Jedidiah–You forgot to include the link.

What you basically want to do is select the anchored box. Then (this is what I do)–use your keyboard down key and move the box down. The box will go down and the text will rise up. Then–making sure the anchored box is active–put a text wrap on the right-hand side; this will ensure the text aligns on the right.

That works great, thanks so much.

Glad it’s working for you. Oh–you may want to select the anchored object and create an anchored object style.

Ok, I’ll look into that. One error I keep getting when I move the anchored object down to a certain point is “This value would cause one or more objects to leave the pasteboard.” The object isn’t near the edge of the page. I can’t figure out the cause.

Yeah–that sometimes happens. You can only nudge it up or down so far.

You will probably have to select the anchored object and then go to the menu bar and select the anchored object settings and fiddle with that. You may need to select above line and control it that way.
