      Is there a best practice for importing Microsoft Word documents that will retain highlighting that has been applied to text? I have found myself in this situation lately but I have ended up creating a character style in InDesign and applying it manually. The only way I can think of is style mapping; but do I have to do any prep work in Word before I import to InDesign? Do I have to create a character style in Word first in order to Map that style?

      Yes, you should be able to create a character style in Word that maps to a character style in InDesign.
