      HI,

I just finish a catalogue on indesign CS6 and have a print test. No problem!

Now, trying to open the file to do the final adjustents, and the file won´t open!

It says ” CANNOT OPEN THE FILE “XXXXXX.INDD” Adobe Indesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file maybe open in another application”

I think, is there a problem with the file because it have now nearly 5gbs!!!!

      Any help please?!!?!?!

      PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would shut down the computer and reboot. With a file that large your Indesign program may have run out of the allocated memory.
Hopefully, that will help. If you do manage to get it open, you might want to divide the document up into smaller files (document Page 1-20 etc).
      Good luck

That error is almost always because you are trying to open a document created in a later version of InDesign in an earlier version of InDesign. (For example, trying to open a CC file in CS6, or CS6 in CS5).

      HI!

Thanks for the helps, but none are helpful..

      I already shutdown the computer.

And DAVID BLATNER, no that’s not it! I use Cs6 and only Cs6. The File was create in that version and i work on that with no problem. The file has aprox 800mb and know it was 5gbs by it self. I just save it and nothing happens, no error, no problem!

When i try it open give me that error…

      It is a mystery.

The only thing I can think of is to see if you can find someone with another version of InDesign, such as InDesign CC. Open it there, and then save as IDML. Then open the IDML file in your older version of InDesign.

I just got 2019 Indesign, monthly fee. I created my book file, then pressed OPEN to start uploading chapter documents I’ve written for the book. And I get the EXACT same thing: “…Adobe Indesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application.”

Yes, I have turned my laptop off, then on.

My chapter documents were one on Page, then I have them in Google Drive. I pulled one out back to Documents…same problem.

Sure would appreciate anyone who can unlock this mystery

The next to last sentence should say “were DONE on Pages” not one.

I have now found out that I can’t import Page, Word, PDF or RTF docs. Why would Indesign be created like that?? What’s the point of creating an app that you can’t get anything into?

you might be confusing opening, importing and place, all three of these things will handle different files. For word and rtf may I suggest you use the Place function found in the file menu

Having the exact same issue. I am using Adobe InDesign CC 2019. Had the file open yesterday. It’s only 5.1 MB. Tried to open it today and get the same error, “CANNOT OPEN THE FILE “XXXXXX.INDD” Adobe Indesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file maybe open in another application”.

I have a brand new 2019 iMac with OS 10.14.3 Mojave, 4.2 GHz Intel Core i7, and 32 GB 2400 MHz DDR4. I have restarted machine, tried opening a copy, tried opening it on my old machine, etc. FAIL! And it is giving me an error on all of the files in that whole folder now too.

      I am super frustrated!

Randi: Please check to make sure you launched the most recent version of InDesign. The error you’re describing is almost always from accidentally using an earlier version of the program (for example, you may have two versions of InDesign on your computer).

The problem originally started in December 2018. I bought the new computer thinking there must be a virus or something I couldn’t find. There is only Indesign CC 2019 on this computer. Did not help, and now I’m finding more with the same issue. This is 100% an InDesign problem. Too many updates, too many version changes. They have absolutely screwed up something!

Randi: If you open the Creative Cloud app, does it say that InDesign is Up to Date? Or perhaps there is a newer version?

It’s also possible that the document has become corrupted, though that would be very unusual.

    • #114928

Yes it is up to date … I double checked that this morning too. I have about 30 other files it is also doing this to. I don’t feel that any of them are corrupt. One day they open, and the next they don’t.

Currently I’m using InDesign CC 2019 version 14.0.1 according to Creative Cloud.

      Doodlebug1 and Randi:
      Have you resolved the issues?
If yes, would you share your solution?
If no, can you share a link to one of your documents (using dropbox, box, creative cloud, etc?)
There is version history in each InDesign file that would indicate version history, needed plug-ins, etc. and I’d be willing to take a look at it.

My experience is that needed plug-ins rarely, if ever, cause a file to not open.
I’m in agreement with others here that the most likely cause is version related.
And knowing it’s a complex world, yep, there could be something else at play.
